The Best Beaches in Sri Lanka: A Complete Guide
From the surf breaks of Weligama to the desert-island serenity of Pigeon Island — Sri Lanka's beaches are as diverse as the island itself.
Sri Lanka has over 1,600 kilometres of coastline and a remarkable diversity of beach environments — from the palms-and-surf breaks of the southwest to the calm, clear turquoise shallows of the east coast, and the dramatic, reef-fringed bays of the south. Here's how to choose the right beach for the kind of trip you want.
South Coast — Mirissa, Tangalle & Weligama
The south coast between Galle and Tangalle is Sri Lanka's most popular beach stretch, and for good reason. Mirissa is a beautiful crescent bay backed by palm trees — the jumping-off point for whale watching and a great place to swim. Weligama's long, gently curving bay has become Sri Lanka's prime learn-to-surf destination. Tangalle, further east, is quieter, wilder, and more beautiful — long stretches of empty beach with powerful surf and sea turtles nesting at night.
East Coast — Trincomalee & Arugam Bay
The east coast is Sri Lanka's hidden gem. Trincomalee has arguably the finest natural harbour in Asia and some of the best snorkelling on the island — Pigeon Island, a short boat ride offshore, has undamaged coral and excellent sea turtle sightings. Arugam Bay on the far southeast coast is one of Asia's legendary surf breaks, with a right-hand point break that attracts surfers from around the world during the May–September season.
West Coast — Negombo & Kalpitiya
Negombo, just north of the airport, is a convenient first or last night beach stop — good for seafood, reasonable for swimming. Kalpitiya, further north, is Sri Lanka's best kitesurfing destination and a jumping-off point for dolphin watching and the extraordinary bar reef snorkelling.
