Know before you go

Remove shoes and headwear before entering the cave temples. Shoulders and knees must be covered (sarong provided).
The steps up to the caves are steep. Comfortable footwear that can be easily removed is recommended.

Itinerary

Dambulla Cave Temple

Stop: 90 minutes

Visit all five cave chambers. Your guide explains the Buddhist iconography, the history of the 2,000-year-old murals, and the significance of the statues — from the reclining Parinirvana Buddha to the standing Maitreya.

Village Walk — Toddy Tapping & Pottery

Stop: 60 minutes

Walk through a working village. Watch a toddy tapper scale a palm tree barefoot, see a potter at the wheel, and observe handloom weavers at work on traditional looms.

Village Lunch

Stop: 60 minutes

Sit down to a home-cooked meal with your village host family. Enjoy authentic rice and curry with a spread of coconut sambol, dhal, and seasonal vegetables.
