Morning departures at 07:00 and 08:00. Afternoon departure at 14:00 (not recommended in hot season).

Know before you go

The climb involves approximately 1,200 steps. A moderate level of fitness is required. Not recommended for guests with heart conditions or severe vertigo.
Start early — the rock is significantly cooler and less crowded before 9am. Midday can be extremely hot.
Wear light, breathable clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring sunscreen and a hat.

Additional information

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times on the upper sections.

Collect your entry tickets. Your archaeologist guide provides an overview of Sigiriya's history — from jungle hideout to royal palace to Buddhist monastery.

Water Gardens & Boulder Gardens

Stop: 30 minutes

Explore the sophisticated hydraulic water gardens at the base — one of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world — and the giant boulder complexes used by monks.

The Fresco Pocket

Stop: 25 minutes

Climb to the sheltered pocket in the rock face housing the famous frescoes. Your guide explains the debate over whether these are celestial beings or King Kashyapa's wives.

The Mirror Wall

Stop: 20 minutes

Walk alongside the ancient polished plaster wall, so smooth it once reflected the frescoes above. Read centuries of visitor graffiti inscribed by medieval Sri Lankans.

Lion's Paw Terrace

Stop: 15 minutes

Reach the enormous carved lion's paws — all that remains of the colossal lion statue through whose mouth the final staircase once passed.

Summit Ruins & Royal Palace

Stop: 45 minutes

Reach the summit and explore the ruins of King Kashyapa's royal palace, throne platform, and swimming pool — 200 metres above the jungle with views stretching to the horizon.
